I have a bunch of female friends who adore Harley Quinn so thank gawd they don’t follow this tumblr because I’m about to state why I will never see why so many women love her!! So to any Harley lovers quit reading because I’m about to bash your favorite character.
Harley Quinn; the ambitious career woman who gives up her independence and career to become an abused sidekick/girlfriend (mind you she was driven to insanity maybe….?) is a good way to start. Who the joker has beaten and bruised and she keeps saying “gimme some more Jack. I think I’ll have another!”
She never tries to leave the abusive relationship, she never stands up for herself (except in recent adaptations like Injustice). She just takes it and I argue that this could be read as glamorizing abusive relationships, rejecting feminist values by championing submissive even self-negating feminine behavior, so thanks for setting us back another hundred years Harley. Although many women (and men) may go though this (not to get into too much detail but I have experienced someone very close to me go though this for most of my young life…which could be argued why maybe that I feel so adamantly against this character) and she may be relatable; she should by no means be any self respecting person’s idolized character.
Lastly, in one of the animated series episodes Harley asks Ivy “I am not a doormat…am I?” Poison Ivy’s reply is, “If you had a middle name it would be ‘welcome’!”.
